Ouranos Announces a New Affiliate: the Université du Québec à Rimouski

June 20, 2008

The members of Ouranos, a consortium of R&D experts in regional climatology and adaptation to climate change, can now count on the official support and expertise of a new affiliated member, the Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR). The new partner will strengthen Ouranos' research activities and comes as further proof of the consortium's drawing power.

The UQAR's contribution to Ouranos' research activities fits in well with the consortium's scientific program and will focus on a number of areas of expertise: ice dynamics in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, its influence on riverbank and shoreline erosion, assessing the costs involved in adapting to coastal erosion, and the impact of climate change on biodiversity and Quebec's land ecosystems.

Ouranos is a consortium that brings together some 250 scientists and professionals from different disciplines. Its work objectives are established on the basis of issues and needs expressed by its members and government departments and institutions in Quebec and across Canada. These issues are grouped into a number of themes: public safety and secure infrastructures, energy supply, water resources, health, forestry, agricultural, mining, tourism and transportation operations, and protecting the natural environment.

Ouranos is proud of this new affiliation, as it will add to the consortium's expertise in a number of key fields related to adaptation to climate change.
