Ouranos

Consortium on Regional Climatology and Adaptation to Climate Change

Background

A shared vision

Ouranos was created in 2001 as a joint initiative by the Quebec government, Hydro-Québec and Environment Canada, with the financial support of Valorisation-Recherche-Québec.

Their vision:

to provide Quebec and all of Canada with an organization capable of meshing:

  • climate science WITH
  • the adaptation needs of society
Objective

To help society adapt to increasing climate change.

An innovative approach

Right from the start, Ouranos took an innovative approach by:

  • bringing together researchers from many disciplines and different institutions
  • conducting integrated research projects that combine:
    • the development of regional climate projections
    • the assessment of physical and human impacts related to climate change and adequate adaptation measures to prepare for them
    • different stakeholders in adaptation, in a research setting: municipalities, government departments, professional orders, decision makers and researchers.
