Context

By their very nature, agricultural systems are highly exposed to risks and climate variability. This makes climate adaptation essential for them. Agricultural producers are also confronted with economic and social changes, reshaping the supply and demand for agricultural commodities, and hence their availability. In this context, climate change is another factor in the changing environment for the agricultural sector.

Quebec producers have some valuable advantages in dealing with climate change, given their location in the moist Nordic region and well-structured agricultural institutions. So as to not only encourage the sector to adapt to climate change but also to support sustainable development initiatives, it is important that players in the agricultural sector be able to include the latest information on the changing climate in their decision-making process.

Objectives

  • Add to knowledge about climate change and take this knowledge into account so as to:
    • assess soil, water, fertilizer and plant health product management in the context of climate change
    • support strategic planning in the agricultural industry.
  • Develop climate analysis tools so as to help integrate climate concepts into risk management in agriculture.

Research projects

  • Agriculture and land use
  • Adaptation by farms
  • Apple growers
  • Grain corn and soy
