Ouranos seeks a director to head the new International Project Office (IPO) for the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) core project “Regional Information for Society” (RIfS). The director will assemble a team, define the IPO’s identity and fulfill its mandate.

 
About  the RIfS International Project Office

The focus of Regional Information for Society (RIfS) is to grow the foundations for effective links between climate research and the information needs of society.  This builds on core research principles of providing actionable information through integrating the best available science that is aligned with the scales of relevance to society’s decision contexts. 

RIfS was officialy approved by the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee in November 2020, and the draft Science and Implementation Plan was approved in June 2022.

 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Recruit and manage IPO staff;

  • Manage budget and expenditures, approximately US$2.5M over five years;

  • Ensure the IPO fulfills its terms of reference, under the guidance of the RIfS co-chairs, members of the Scientific Steering Group, WCRP leadership and the WCRP Secretariat; 

  • Participate in sessions of RIfS governing bodies and represent RIfS at relevant international meetings;

  • Manage the membership of the RIfS assembly; 
    Manage the membership of the RIfS external board;

  • Oversee the RIfS Secretariat’s contributions to written reports and presentations, including the organization on relevant workshops and meetings

  • Develop and maintain record keeping systems to facilitate links and communications with other WCRP projects;

  • Seek synergies with Ouranos activities and staff; 

  • Mobilize financial and in-kind resources to ensure the sustainability of the RIfS IPO. 

 
Skills and Experience
  • Degree in a climate-related discipline; 

  • Knowledge in regional climate modeling and/or in climate scenarios and services is an asset for this position;

  • Experience of managing staff;

  • Experience of managing budgets and producing financial reports;

  • Experience in working with international organisations within the climate network;

  • Strong, interpersonal, negotiation and influencing skills with staff at all levels;

  • Excellent organisational skills;

  • Excellent verbal, written communication and presentation skills;

  • Proven ability to identify, propose, plan and implement services and processes;

  • Experience in attracting funding from various sources;

  • At least 7 years of relevant work experience;

  • Willingness to travel overseas for periods of up to seven days;

  • Fluency in English is mandatory and French is an asset for this position. 

This is a full-time position available immediately, located in Montréal (Canada).
