Science and Communication Officer
  • Full time
  • WCRP
  • RIfS
  • Montréal (bureaux d'Ouranos)

The new RIfS (Regional Information for Society) project office in Montreal is hiring! RIfS is a Core Project of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP), which has been advancing international collaboration in climate science for 40+ years. RIfS works to narrow the gap between scientific advances and users of climate information. Our office facilitates this work by advancing the activities of RIfS and supporting and collaborating with a wide volunteer network.

We’re looking for a scientist communicator to join a small team with big ambitions. You will be integral in setting up RIfS for success, as part of a small team of four. International experience and excellent written and spoken English are high priority for this role.
Some of the tasks you would engage in include support for working groups consisting of volunteers from all over the world; writing content for a newsletter; writing reports about meetings and workshops that we organize; and managing the website and social media, in coordination with our host organization and the WCRP Secretariat.

The science & communication officer should have a background in physical climate science, like atmospheric or oceanic sciences, or have studied the land-surface, cryosphere or hydrologic cycle in a context that brought them into contact with climate models or global coupled systems. A master’s degree is adequate. A PhD is preferred.

You should have some experience explaining climate science in an interdisciplinary context to experts in other fields or, for example, in an adaptation planning context with local decision-makers. Key is the ability to adapt to the needs of different audiences.

As a small office, we all need to chip in to help with administrative tasks. We value collaboration, empathy, inclusivity, and being communicative and proactive. We will favor candidates who can demonstrate cultural competency to work with diverse populations internationally.

International meetings will occur in English, and the office in Montreal where we are hosted is French-speaking, so you will be expected to learn French if you don’t know it.
